WHO BENEFITS FROM NIGERIA'S OIL WEALTH ?                                                AGADA DEMANDS TRANSPARENCY AND REINVESTMENT

YPP candidate proposes review of subsidy policy and a model designed to channel benefits towards poorer Nigerians

Nigeria's oil economy has again entered the centre of a presidential policy debate, with Arch. Peter Agada proposing a new approach to petroleum revenue management as part of his Labour-Direct agenda.

In his Independence Day message, Agada called for total transparency in oil-revenue management.

He also proposed reviewing the subsidy-removal policy and establishing what he described as a retention-and-reinvestment model intended to benefit poorer Nigerians.

The proposal places the question of oil wealth distribution at the centre of his economic programme.

For decades, Nigeria's petroleum sector has generated substantial public revenue while also producing recurring debates over subsidies, revenue leakages, refining capacity, petroleum-sector governance and the distribution of resource benefits.

Agada's proposal therefore attempts to connect petroleum policy directly to household welfare.

His argument is that oil policy should ultimately be measured by whether ordinary Nigerians experience tangible benefits.

The proposed approach would require substantial institutional mechanisms for transparency, revenue accounting and targeted reinvestment.

It would also require the government to balance petroleum-sector reform with fiscal sustainability and the need to maintain investment in the industry.

For Agada, however, the political principle is straightforward: Nigeria's natural resources should produce visible national development.
