The Labour Party (LP) has formally confirmed Hon. Gaza Jonathan Gbefwi as its governorship candidate for Nasarawa State in the 2027 general election following a peaceful consensus primary conducted in Lafia where Hon Gaza Scored 76,097 Votes to return as the winner of the election.

The announcement was made on Friday, May 30, 2026 in Abuja at the press briefing where the party unveiled its Presidential Candidate to Nigerians, by the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Ayodele Olurunfemi, during a briefing in Abuja after the submission and review of reports from governorship primaries conducted across the country in accordance with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable.

Hon. Gbefwi emerged as the party’s candidate through a consensus process, having stood as the sole aspirant for the Nasarawa State governorship ticket. Party leaders described the exercise as peaceful, transparent, and reflective of the collective will of party stakeholders across the state.

According to Dr. Olurunfemi, Hon. Gbefwi received overwhelming endorsement from party members and community leaders, particularly from the Karu, Keffi, and Kokona Federal Constituency.

“Following the successful conduct of the consensus primary in Lafia and the verification of the official report submitted by returning officers, the Labour Party hereby confirms Hon. Gaza Jonathan Gbefwi as its duly nominated governorship candidate for Nasarawa State in the 2027 election,” he stated.

Hon. Gbefwi currently represents Karu, Keffi, and Kokona Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and is serving in the 10th National Assembly.

He is widely recognized for his grassroots engagement, youth empowerment initiatives, and extensive political network across Nasarawa State.

Political stakeholders have described his emergence as a significant development in the state’s political landscape, citing his strong connection with local communities and growing support among young voters.

The national leadership of the Labour Party reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Hon. Gbefwi’s candidacy, describing the consensus primary as a demonstration of party unity and internal cohesion.

Dr. Olurunfemi noted that the party intends to build on its growing presence in the North-Central region and position itself as a formidable force in the 2027 governorship race.

With the nomination process concluded, attention is expected to shift toward campaign organization, policy articulation, stakeholder engagement, and the eventual selection of a running mate.

Party strategists believe that Hon. Gbefwi’s legislative experience, grassroots appeal, and established political structure will strengthen the Labour Party’s efforts to challenge the dominance of the major political parties in Nasarawa State ahead of the 2027 elections.

As preparations intensify nationwide, other political parties are also expected to finalize and announce their candidates in line with the electoral timetable.
