Financial accountability is emerging as one of the defining issues of Chief Ceekay Igara's campaign for the Abia State governorship.

The Labour Party candidate's supporters say the state needs a governance system in which public finances can be tracked from revenue collection to expenditure and ultimately to measurable public benefit.

Their proposed answer is a comprehensive forensic audit.

The idea is based on a simple principle:

Public money belongs to the people.

Igara's supporters say government should therefore be able to explain where every major allocation goes.

A forensic approach would, in their description, examine financial records, procurement processes, contracts, payments and project delivery.

The campaign says the objective would be to identify waste, duplication, inefficiencies and potential leakages while strengthening systems of accountability.

But financial auditing is only one component of Igara's proposed governance philosophy.

His supporters also want public projects subjected to stronger monitoring.

A road contract, for example, should not be considered successful merely because money has been released or a contractor has been mobilised.

The campaign argues that success should be measured by whether the road was properly designed, constructed according to specification and delivered within the approved financial framework.

The same principle, they say, should apply to schools, hospitals, water projects and other government infrastructure.

This approach reflects Igara's professional identity as an engineer.

His supporters believe that engineering teaches precision, documentation and accountability.

Those qualities, they argue, should become part of public administration.

The proposed audit agenda is also connected to the campaign's economic programme.

If government can identify unnecessary spending and reduce leakages, supporters say, more resources could potentially be directed towards infrastructure, youth employment, industrial development and social services.

But an audit alone cannot transform an economy.

It must be accompanied by strong institutions and political will.

That is where the campaign's broader governance philosophy comes in.

Igara's supporters are advocating a government where policies are developed with measurable objectives and evaluated according to results.
