Gunshots Rattle Maiduguri

Heavy gunshots this evening rattled residents of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in Nigeria's troubled northeast region. This area has been the epicenter of attacks by Boko Haram, a militant Islamist group that has been on the retreat since Nigerian troops began attacking their installations in the region.
The gunshots started around 6:50 pm and lasted for 20 minutes, several residents told SaharaReporters. The sources added that the gunshots were believed to originate from a cashew plantation behind Giwa Barracks, on the outskirts of  Maiduguri.
One resident, who lives near Giwa Barracks, disclosed that residents in the area had fled their homes to safer area when the gunshots started.
Abdulfatai ‎Wasiu told SaharaReporters by phone "I am now in Damboa Road as a result of loud gunshots in our area. It is unbearable."
Another resident, Abba Ibrahim, said the gunshots came from an area known as Cashews Plantation opposite the University of Maiduguri.
As at the time of filing this report, our correspondent was unable to reach any security sources to ascertain the source of the gunshots as well as any casualty figures.
